About
Time: 5:30PM-9:30PM (4 hours volunteer time and yes, you must be available for the entire time)
Location: Milton J Womack Park-Ballroom, 6201 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70806. Please park and enter through the Ardenwood side of the building which is the same side as Rouses Supermarket.
**Please note that once we reach the maximum number of volunteers for each night, we CANNOT increase or add more volunteers because of the limitation of space. We do not acccept large groups for this opportunity. Please be mindful of the number of spots when making a reservation for your group.
**Please read carefully before signing up to volunteer. If you cannot make it, please cancel your shift. This is a very popular volunteer opportunity.**
All Volunteers MUST pre-register for each night if you would like to volunteer. If you do not see a button to register, then we are no longer taking volunteers for that date. Volunteers that are not registered, you will be turned away. Volunteers must be 16 years old or older to volunteer for this opportunity and MUST arrive on time for the volunteer debriefing. We have a short training talk beforehand and it is necessary for all volunteers to be on time.
Event Description:
"Dance the night away with BREC Adaptive and Families Helping Families as we host our monthly Sunshine Socials. Be creative and dress to match each month’s theme. Enjoy dinner, dancing, and door prizes."
Volunteers are needed to help with dinner, games, and fun! You must pre-register for this popular volunteer opportunity. Unfortunately, we always reach our maximum number of volunteers. Please cancel your shift if you change your mind so that others may have the opportunity to help out. All un-registered volunteers will be turned away upon arrival. Thank you!
Volunteers can dress up for the occasion/theme of the night for fun if they wish, but it is not necessary. Please wear what makes you feel comfortable.
Volunteers will assist with greeting participants, serve dinner, and cleanup. You may also participate with patrons. Assignments and locations will be given during the volunteer briefing. If this is your first time volunteering with this population, please inform the BREC staff during the briefing. We will assign you to serving dinner to help you ease into interactions and ensure you feel comfortable.
Please note that you will be working with teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To ensure a positive experience for everyone, keep these key points in mind when interacting with our participants:
Volunteer Guidelines – Keeping It Simple & Fun!
1. Be Friendly – Our participants love meeting new people, so introduce yourself and engage! If a question or conversation makes you uncomfortable, kindly redirect or ask a BREC staff member for help.
2. Be Patient – Some participants may need extra time to process what you say. Instead of repeating yourself right away, pause and give them a moment to respond.
3. Respect Personal Space – Some participants may not understand boundaries and might go in for a hug. We recommend side hugs or high fives instead. If someone makes you uncomfortable or doesn’t respect your space, gently redirect them and notify a BREC staff member.
4. Have Fun! – Get on the dance floor, interact, and enjoy the experience. Your energy helps create a fun and welcoming atmosphere!
